Assistant boss Craig Shakespeare says Leicester City may extend Aston Villa striker Nathan Delfouneso’s loan deal.

The 21-year-old joined for a month but has been limited to four substitute appearances because of the form of Jermaine Beckford and David Nugent.

Shakespeare told

BBC Radio Leicester:

“We’re due to speak to Villa and we are waiting to hear from them. We don’t know what they want.”

Delfouneso’s deal is due to expire after Thursday’s game at Derby County.

Shakespeare added: “He’s had a bit part to play at the moment. I suppose he’s’ disappointed he has not had a run but that’s down to the form of Beckford and Nugent.”

Shrewsbury Town’s top scorer James Collins says he has no regrets over leaving Aston Villa.

Collins spent five years working his way up the Villa youth ranks – but a loan to Burton was followed in January 2011 by a permanent deal at Shrewsbury.

“I had great years there and worked with some great coaches, but I was never going to get into the first team,” he told BBC Radio Shropshire.

“I needed to move, and Shrewsbury gave me the chance to revive my career.”

Collins, who has just turned 21, realised he did not figure in Villa’s plans after Martin O’Neill left the club.

“It was my time to go – Gerard Houllier had come in and was making changes and I needed to get out and play,” he said.

Collins signed an 18-month deal for Graham Turner at Shrewsbury in January 2011, and this season has topped their scoring charts with 10 goals.

He also bagged a hat-trick recently for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s against Liechtenstein.

“I had some great times at Villa but I have no regrets about leaving,” he said.

“Everything’s going really well for me at the moment, and I’m very happy.”

Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish is heading to the United States to discuss ideas with NFL outfit

Cleveland Browns

‘ head coach Pat Shurmur.

Randy Lerner, who owns both clubs, thinks it will benefit Villa, who sit 15th in the Premier League.

Chief executive Paul Faulkner said: “Alex felt this was an ideal opportunity to exchange ideas with his American counterparts.”

The Browns are bottom of the AFC North division with just fours wins from 16.

Villa, meanwhile, have won just once in their last six Premier League games, a run that leaves them seven points above the relegation zone.

With the Premier League on a two-week break because of the FA Cup, McLeish is using the time to travel to the States to take part in a brainstorming session with Shurmur about player evaluation, scouting, rehab and training.

He will be joined on the two-day trip to the Browns’ base in Berea, outside Cleveland, by assistant manager Peter Grant, fitness coach Adrian Lamb, Dr Ian McGuinness and performance analyst Patrick Riley.

Shurmur, who joined the Browns as head coach last year, has worked with the Philadelphia Eagles and St Louis Rams during his 13 seasons working in the NFL.

McLeish has come under pressure from fans for the club’s disappointing form, with a demonstration against the former Birmingham manager on Sunday at Villa Park before the

1-0 defeat by league leaders Manchester City.

Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish says Richard Dunne could be out for at least a month after injuring his shoulder in the 1-0 defeat by Manchester City.

Defender Dunne went up for a challenge with City goalkeeper Joe Hart in the closing minutes of

the match at Villa Park

and landed awkwardly.

“I do believe he is going to be out for at least a month, so that’s serious enough,” said McLeish.

“It doesn’t look good and he doesn’t look too comfortable.”

With Ciaran Clark also out for a period of time, after damaging knee ligaments in training on Saturday, Villa are short of cover in central defence.

Meanwhile, McLeish implored Villa’s fans to support his team, despite a run of results that has seen them drop to 15th in the Premier League table.

Up to 70 disgruntled supporters gathered before the game calling for McLeish to leave the club.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini

Mancini buoyed by ‘fantastic’ City

“It’s fashionable in the modern game and a bit of phenomenon,” said the Scotsman, formerly manager of cross-town rivals Birmingham City.

“But I’d rather they support the team if they don’t fancy me. That’s not under my control. What is [under my control] is getting as much as we can from the squad.

“I’m confident we can get Villa up the table again.”

McLeish added that he was pleased with the effort of his players against table-topping City, despite his side losing out to a Joleon Lescott goal.

“The boys deserved something out of it, but we haven’t had much luck,” he said.

“The discipline of the team and the way we stuck to it was crucial to try and beat Manchester City but unfortunately we lost it on a set-piece.

“We had a chance on a set-piece but we couldn’t put it in the net. That’s the difference.”

“I’ve been less than delighted with our home form but the performance level was pretty decent. Lady Luck in front of goals is eluding us but we certainly gave everything.”

Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish praised the “silent majority” who he believes are backing him, ahead of a planned protest by fans on Sunday.

A Villa supporters’ website posted a message calling for those opposed to the Scot’s management to gather outside Villa Park an hour before their match against Manchester City.

He said: “There were some who expressed dissent at the start of the season.

“I know the silent majority have been tremendous in supporting the team.”

Villa have recorded only six wins in 24 league games, with fans website ‘Vital Villa’ claiming this is “relegation form”.

McLeish added: “I’ve met some of the fans and I really felt their passion, but I think they felt mine as well. I’m determined I’ll get it right at this club.

“I do believe, in one or two other seasons, there have been sticky moments as well. This season is a bit of a rollercoaster but the points are there for us to climb the table.”

As regards the intended protest, McLeish, whose Villa side are 13th in the Premier League, said: “It is out of my control, it is a modern-day fashion.

“There were rumours of a protest against [Arsenal manager] Arsene Wenger a couple of weeks ago, so I’m in pretty good company!

“At the same time, it’s not something I’m going to say I enjoy because we all like to be popular.

“It’s a minority and something out of my control. But the one thing I can control is the team and what effort they put in to get the best out of them because I am pretty good at that.”

Striker Robbie Keane will make his final home appearance of his Villa loan spell, but McLeish has not ruled out bringing him back.

McLeish said: “I don’t know. I am probably best to say you never know and maybe leave that one dangling.

“Would I get Keane back if there was a chance? I would like to have a crack, yes.

“He has been enlightening in terms of his performances. They have been great but he has been a great character around the place and has livened things up a bit.”

Premier League

TEAM NEWS

Aston Villa hope that winger Marc Albrighton and defender James Collins will return from the respective thigh and calf injuries that caused them to miss the FA Cup defeat by Arsenal.

Charles N’Zogbia remains sidelined.

QPR could be short of attacking options as Heidar Helguson is a doubt with a groin problem and DJ Campbell and Jay Bothroyd are unlikely to be fit.

Akos Buzsaky may miss out with an ankle injury but newcomers Taye Taiwo and Nedum Onuoha hope to be involved.

MATCH PREVIEW

Aston Villa’s dire recent home form has been as unfathomable as the absence of an apostrophe in Queens Park Rangers.

There’s still a little bit of unease up there with the manager and what have you, so it’s something we need to try and take advantage of

QPR defender Luke Young

It is nearly three months since Villa last won in front of their own fans, and a run of four successive defeats was only checked by a draw with Everton in their most recent home fixture.

Having been outgunned by Arsenal’s second-half fightback in the FA Cup on Sunday, all that remains for Villa this season is to try and better last year’s ninth-placed finish.

QPR’s own cup exit, to Chelsea, also narrows their focus to the league, and more precisely the avoidance of an immediate return to the Championship. To that end, new manager Mark Hughes has augmented his squad with athletic, powerful players in the transfer window.

Hughes, who denies being overlooked for the Villa job last summer, has never won as a manager at Villa Park. However, his opposite number Alex McLeish is faring little better; with the home support restless, McLeish will need to beat the Hoops- and jump through a few more – to appease them.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

  • Aston Villa have won the last four league meetings at Villa Park. QPR’s last win at Villa in the league came in March 1992.
  • Rangers won their last match at Villa Park – a 1-0 victory in the League Cup third round in September 2008. Damion Stewart scored the only goal.

Aston Villa

  • Villa are winless in their last five home league matches, having lost four of them. It is their longest run at home without victory since a six-match streak between January to April 2009.
  • They are attempting to win back-to-back league matches for the first time this season.
  • Villa and Wolves have recovered an unequalled 10 points from losing positions this season.
  • Alex McLeish’s side are the only team not to have scored from a corner routine in the Premier League this season, according to Opta.
  • Darren Bent is one shy of his 100th Premier League goal.
  • If fit, James Collins could make his 200th English league appearance, while Stephen Warnock is set to play in his 200th Premier League game.

QPR

  • QPR are looking to win successive Premier League matches for the first time since December 1995.
  • As a manager, Mark Hughes has never won a Premier League game at Villa Park (D4, L3).
  • Rangers have conceded in each of their last 13 league matches.
  • If fit, Akos Buzsaky could make his 200th English league appearance.

Robin van Persie

Van Persie scored two second-half penalties in Arsenal’s win at Emirates Stadium

Arsenal captain Robin van Persie will face no further action over an incident involving Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar during the sides’ FA Cup tie.

Villa boss Alex McLeish had called on the Football Association to investigate after he believed Van Persie had caught Cuellar with his elbow.

However, referee Mike Jones witnessed the incident at the time, meaning no retrospective action can be taken.

Two Van Persie penalties helped the Gunners to a 3-2 victory.

Villa led 2-0 at the break at Emirates Stadium through a Richard Dunne header and a finish from an acute angle by Darren Bent.

But three goals in seven minutes turned the tie upside down, Van Persie making it 2-1 after Dunne fouled Aaron Ramsey.

Theo Walcott levelled before Van Persie sealed victory with a second penalty after Bent’s foul on Laurent Koscielny.
